GH2017.71 Men At Work

Early afternoon in a luxury suite of a hotel near the arena. There's a
knock on the door. Mark, drawing his pistol, moves to the door checking
through the peephole. Silently he replaces his weapon shaking his
head. Recognizing the visitor, he opens the door.
Mark:(uncommittedly) Mr. Cassadine, I don't think Brooke is expecting
you.
Brooke: (coming from the bedroom wearing casual attire and bare feet)
Gees Mark! Ease up! Hiya Stefan, How are you? I just talked to Nik
last night.
Stefan: (Gives her a hug and then drawing back, holds her face between
his two hands- concern in his voice.) You're tired. I can see it in
your face, and so pale. Are you all right?
Brooke: I think I may have caught some kind of stomach virus. You
really shouldn't be so close to me...you don't want this.
Stefan: Have you been to see a doctor?
Brooke grimaces as Mark gloats: I'm really glad you showed up, Mr.
Cassadine. I was going to suggest the same thing. In fact, I made an
appointment for her.
Brooke: You are a worrywart!
Stefan: But since the appointment has already been made...
Brooke: Fine, fine! I'm not going to argue with both of you. When's
the appointment?
Mark: You have enough time for some tea and a visit with your friend.
Brooke: (indignantly) TEA!
Mark: I'm glad that you approve. (he walks into the kitchenette)
Brooke: He is always like that; Mark is worse than my cousin for bossing
people around!
Stefan: (curious)You care for him?
Brooke: (shrugging her shoulders) Sure. He's been a good friend. (Then
louder) and like any friend, he can also be a pain in the ass!
Mark: (laughing as he calls out from the kitchenette) I heard that.
Brooke: (Shaking her head) Nothing phases him. He just does what he
thinks he has to and drags me along.
Stefan: That hardly sounds comfortable.
Brooke:(pointedly) No, but it's hard to argue with someone who believes
they're always right.
Stefan: (Silently smiles waiting as Mark places a tray on the coffee
table) I can drive you to your appointment if you'd like?
Mark: That won't be necessary, sir.
Brooke: (ruefully) He'd just come with us, Stefan. How is everyone back
in PC?
Stefan: (Studying Mark closely) Carida passed her driver's test.
Brooke: That's great! So when's the party?
Stefan: I think Georgie and Laura are planning one. How is it you
missed such an important American rite of passage?
Brooke: I've lived in the city all my life; I haven't needed one.
Besides, (she grins) I just met Lucky this year.
Stefan: (Nodding) Yes, since a truce was declared between the families,
the only pleasure he gets is giving me gray hair: Lucas, Lesleylu,
Georgie, now Cari...
Brooke: (grin broadens) Plan on leaving town before he starts teaching
Staci?
Stefan: ( with a small smile and a nod)Perhaps. Lu is staying on the
island as are Staci and Stone. (Stefan watches as Mark eyes his watch
discreetly) I should be going.
Brooke: (protesting) But you just got here?!
Stefan: Yes, but how can I counsel Nikolas to be discreet when I fly off
to see you on a moment's notice?
Brooke: When I talked to him last night, he said he'd try to come to a
show. (Taking his hand as then both rise from the living room couches.)
Give everyone my love.
Stefan: (Again framing her face) I'd like to paint you again. Something
about your face has changed...
Brooke: (laughing)What a lovely way to tell me I have bags under my
eyes!
Stefan: That is not what I meant and you know it. (He kisses both her
cheeks.) I'll see you soon . Be careful, Brooke.
Brooke: You too. I've gotten kinda attached to ya.

Wyndemere. Nikolas is furious.
Nik: I've dug through everything I can think of. I couldn't find out
who the new owner of the Herald is.
Laura: When did the Herald change hands?
Nik: Only a few months ago, but not a peep from anyone. The previous
owner was reasonable.
Laura: You mean he was willing to see things your way.
Nik: ( throwing up his hands as he paces the room) Fine! He saw things
my way. You cannot tell me that you are not as upset as I-- having
Staci and Cari's picture all over the front page!
Laura: You know it bothers me. Keeping distance from the press is
necessary for our continued wellbeing. You and Stefan don't have to
explain to me that the risk to both girls has just gone up exponentially
now that the scum of the earth has faces to go with the names. Cari
might still be okay but Staci is front and center. Just as she was
after she was kidnaped.
Nik: (enraged) THAT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN! I WON'T ALLOW IT!
Laura: (soothing) No, it won't. Honey, we're already on our guard. You
said you had dug through everything YOU thought of?
Nik: (nodding impatiently) Yes, yes... ( he pauses to look at his
mother) What are you thinking?
Laura: We have resources now within the media: the television station
or Billy Onassis. Billy in particular would be able to ferret out
information that you might not. Georgie told me that he's already been
spending some time in the Herald morgue. He wouldn't stick out like a
sore thumb.
Nik: (crossing his arms stares out the window and his eyes focus on a
distant point.) That was foolish of me.
Laura: What do you mean, Nikolas?
Nik: (turning to face his mother) Acting as if I had to do this on my
own.
Laura: (shaking her head) It's understandable, Nikolas. This is too
close to home... for both of us.
Nik: You seem to be taking this ...well.
Laura: Don't worry; I'm not at the cracking point yet. Not as long as
I feel we still have options. I've already been on the phone to
Alexis. She was going to talk to her least favorite principal because
it was a school picture of Staci. Alexis wants to know if he released
it and to whom.
Nik: Alexis has also been working hard as a trustee of Timoria
Communications. Now she knows people within the industry.
Laura: Yes. We'll find out who is behind this soon enough. But I
have a bad feeling about this, Nikolas.
Nik: Have you been on the phone to Lucy again?
Laura: Of course, but that isn't it. There are so many curious things
about this situation. How did that creature get hired by the Herald to
start with? And Staci's photo: okay-- that was local. Someone might
have gotten it by going through a yearbook... But Cari? And Kris?
Someone is watching and I don't mean Bowles.
Nik: (his eyes narrowing)You believe she's a tool for someone else?
Laura: Perhaps. Stefan may be able to see a pattern when he gets back.
Nik: Where is he today?
Laura: Stefan had some business he had to take care of out of town.
Nik: This mess explodes all over the front page and he takes off? What
could be more important than this?
Laura: Stefan didn't see it before he left. If he had, I'm sure I'd be
dealing with both of you, how did Staci put it... "imploding" about the
story.
Nik: I'm glad to see my daughter knows me so well. Mother, I think I'll
head over to the Warehouse to talk to Jerry and Carida. They might have
noticed something. I'll also speak to Mr. Onassis. When Stefan comes
back could you keep him on the island until I talk to him? I think
we'll have some information to exchange. (Nikolas walks out of the room
without waiting for a reply.)
Laura: (softly to her oldest son retreating back) I don't think that'll
be a problem.

Quartermaine Mansion. The study that Justus uses as an office when he's
in Port Charles. The doors are closed.
Emily: ... And that's the whole thing. So how much of a mess am I in?
Justus: Divorce is never fun, Emily. Although there are some in this
family that keep sticking their fingers in the flame never quite
figuring out it's hot.
Emily: Well I've been burnt. It's not a lesson that bears repeating.
Justus, he was so angry; it was scary. I think that his pride was
hurt. He can't really care about me and be with Maxie; unless he's
toying with both of us? I don't want this to get ugly but I want it
over...yesterday.
Justus:(shaking his head) Tommy's always been about control; I remember
that from when I was dating his mother years ago. Hopefully, he's
calmed enough by now to listen to reason. I'll talk to him if you like?
Emily: (sighing in relief) I'd really appreciate it.
Justus: Worse case scenario-- he'll come after a piece of your shares
of ELQ.
Emily: That's why I contacted you so quickly. Gina mentioned that it
might be possibility. Basically she explained what I already knew...
civilized divorce is an oxymoron. I have to work with Tom and his
father at the hospital; I want to preserve the working relationship if I
can. That's why I'm going to leave everything to you. You and I both
know Tommy cannot have any part of ELQ. Jason would have a conniption.
The shares were mine long before I married Tommy but if it'll make
things easier offer him up to seventy-five percent of the value of the
shares. I don't need the money but I do need the peace of mind.
Justus: I'll feel out the situation. I can have some separation papers
drawn up this afternoon; I'll serve him myself. I need you to get me
all the details of marriage financial-investments, common property etc.
as well as the personal information. Here is a tape recorder. Just
talk it all out and I'll have it transcribed.
Emily: Thanks Justus. You've made this a lot easier.
Justus: It's hard enough as it is. There's no need to make things more
difficult. (Standing he comes around the desk to squeeze Emily's
shoulder.) I'll give you some time to work on that information for me.
Emily: Justus? ( He pauses at the door) I don't know how much Jason and
the rest of the family know. I don't know what to tell them. I'm sure
that they've figured out that Tommy has moved out but not why.
Justus: Em, we're all here for you. When you're ready...
Emily: Okay thanks. I'll try not to take too long.

Police Headquarters. Alex Garcia's office, getting on to quitting
time. Evan Scorpio wanders in, his tie loosened and his hair mussed. He
carries a half-filled coffee cup that is rapidly cooling.
Alex: Now you're starting to look like a real cop rather than an FBI
robot.
Evan: It was a lot of information to go through. Your guys are
thorough.
Alex: Trained by the best.
Evan: (grinning) You bragging?
Alex: I'll take some of the credit but your father still puts on
trainings. While he was hell on rules and loyal to a fault which didn't
endear him to the idiots in charge when he was a cop, twenty years in
the PI business made him an expert in evidence collection, interviewing
and surveillance.
Evan: Whenever I speak to him, he tells me he's keeping a chair warm for
you over at Scorpio Investigations.
Alex: And there are days when it looks tempting. Today for one. (Alex
rocks back in his chair and waves Evan to another.) Well what's your
take on the situation?
Evan: (musing) It's not domestic at least not on the surface.
Alex: (nodding) The violence may not be but the roots have a domestic
element. Cassadine believes that this is about international weapons
trafficking. The WSB was in on this from the get go.
Evan: Well let's start pulling this sucker apart and it'll collapse
like a house of cards. You already have that Russian in custody.
Alex: (Nodding) Kidnaping gone wrong. He gave up a few contacts down in
Florida where he entered the country but nothing local. The interesting
thing was the total denial of the bomb. He seemed rather ticked. The
blast actually screwed up their plans.
Evan: (leaning forward in his chair) And that's where I'll be able to
help. I have an appointment with your forensic expert tomorrow. I
should be able to get a M.O. on your bomb builder. I'm also running the
pictures from the apartment building through Langley and department
files. I called one of my buddies over in customs. They have a watch
list of terrorists. We were incredibly lucky that the vids survived the
blast.
Alex: That's Cassadine for you. The family is a bunch of paranoid,
information junkies. High tech all the way and cautious.
Evan: Well you know what they say-- just 'cause you're paranoid...
Alex:... doesn't mean they're not out to get you. Yeah, I know.

GH2017.72 I'd Like To Buy A Clue

The Warehouse in the Jacks' apartment. It's afternoon but most are
home; present are Jerry, Billy, Cari. Georgie has already left for
work. There's a buzz on the intercom. Jerry recognizes Nikolas and
lets him up. A minute later there is a knock at the door. Jerry
answers.
Jerry: Well, this isn't entirely unexpected.
Nik:(stalking into the apartment) Then you've seen the papers.
Billy: (from the couch where the paper is still spread out in front of
him) Bright and early this morning. In fact, I even ran into the author
out in the parking lot. She was trying to figure a way into the
building so that she could do a follow up.
Cari: The security is armed here, right?
Jerry: Darlin, That was an incredibly bloodthirsty comment to make.
Nik: Please-- as if it hadn't crossed all of our minds. Especially
those of us exposed to Bowles' brand of vitriol on more than one
occasion.
Billy:(shaking his head in disbelief) I'd heard stories; I'd even
researched her but this was a new low. It wasn't just a twist of the
facts, which I expected, but also an editorialized version calling for
Cari's indictment. Something I wouldn't have expected for the front
page of a reputable paper.
Nik: (Pouncing) EXACTLY!
Jerry: Exactly what?
Nik: (pacing the living room) I've spent the morning trying to get a
retraction. I found out that the Herald was sold a few months ago but I
can't figure out to whom. Mother pointed the possible connection out:
the paper is abruptly sold, then Bowles goes to work for them, the
hatched job done on Cari. A pattern is developing.
Jerry: (Deep in thought) And just at a time when we'd want to keep the
girls out of the public eye their pictures are spread all over the
paper. Do you think that's the reason for this story? Let's face it;
yeah, the Cassadine are news, but I've thought the bombing would've
been the lead? (He looks over at his son questioningly)
Billy: (nodding) Someone's pulling strings.
Nik: About more than editorials. This is yet another thing that seems
aimed at keeping the family off balance and on defensive. Billy, My
mother indicates that you've spent some time lately over at the Herald?
Billy: (wincing) Yes, but I may have burnt some bridges there; I wasn't
exactly subtle in telling Bowles off.
Cari: (wheedling) You'd have her eating out of your hand in no time.
Billy: Oh that's sweet! Send your brother into the viper's pit.
Cari: (cheerfully)It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it. Come on
think how much fun it will be to get over on her.
Billy: And just how much am I supposed to sacrifice for the family
honor, little sister?
Cari: (shrugging) It's a big hot water heater.
Nik: Jerry, What are you thinking? Jerry?
Jerry: (deep in thought) what? Oh... something Georgie and I were
working on when we first hooked up. You're having trouble ID'ing the
new owner of the paper?
Nik: (impatiently) Yes, yes I've said so. (Jerry walks off without
further comment leaving the others standing ) What's with him?
Cari: ( head slightly tilted and her eyes narrowing, as she watches her
father's retreating back) Something you said must have given him a
clue.
Billy: Well, it would have been nice for him to share!
Cari: It must be WSB stuff. And he gave you a clue, he said it was
related to what he and Georgie were first working on.
Nik: I don't have time to be playing guessing games. Billy, are you
willing to find out what you can from the Herald?
Billy: (shuddering) Yeah, I think I can work up an angle.
Nik: Good. I'm going to see if I can get hold of Alexis see if she can
find out anything through the television station.
Cari: Have you talked to Stone?
Nik: (slightly taken aback.) Why?
Cari: He talks to Claudia Markum almost every day. He says she knows
everything that goes on at the station which is why Alexis is having her
work sort of undercover for her. Claudia is the receptionist at the
station. She hears everything.
Nik: Really? Hmm, I'll have to talk to Stone when I get back to the
island.

General Hospital nurses' lounge. Georgie is on her dinner break when
Jason comes into the room. Without waiting for an invitation, he sits
across from her at the table. Looking around the room carefully, he
focuses on each person until feeling the heat of his glance, they clean
up their meals and leave. As the last one leaves, Jason's bodyguard
stands at the door not allowing anyone else in.
Georgie: (amused)It's amazing what you can do with just a glance. It
must be gratifying to clear a room that way.
Jason: (flatly) I wanted to talk to you privately.
Georgie: (waving a hand to the now empty room) I think this is as
private as it's going to get.
Jason: I want to talk to my wife's cousin not a WSB agent; is that
possible?
Georgie: (wincing) That's just the reason I was trying to keep being
WSB under wraps. I didn't want to deal with this situation. Look, my
father has clues about what you do for a living... maybe more, but he
didn't get them from me and he won't put me in the middle. I don't want
you to put me in that spot either.
Jason: I need a language specialist. It might clear up the problem as
far as the Russians coming after the families. But you might hear some
things you'd need to forget. Can you do that?
Georgie: I'd decide what I choose to forget but I'd tell you exactly
what I "remember" from any conversation I witness.
Jason: (studies her carefully, his raptor blue eyes assessing her
veracity before nodding) I can live with that.
Georgie: What did you have in mind?
Jason: There are a group of men in Brighton who might have some
influence over the Russian contingent that came after Gina and Staci.
We've had ...business together in the past.
Georgie: Russian Mob. ( Jason is silent.) The cops haven't mentioned
anything about 'Jersey, just Florida.
Jason: Doesn't surprise me. The guys that came after Gina were from the
old country. They would have come from Cuba and then in the
time-honored tradition through Miami.
Georgie: And since Castro bit the big one; the Russian mob has started
up the casinos in Cuba again, making it the gambling Mecca that it once
was.
Jason: (pausing briefly) Cuba was a cooperative venture. There are
interests here and in Russia that made the transition... smooth.
Georgie: (curious) Were you in on Castro?
Jason: (smiling) No. But I have specialized knowledge profitable to the
people running things now. It's in their best interests to keep me
happy. And murder and kidnaping in my town doesn't do it.
Georgie: It's your town...
Jason:... and my problem.
Georgie: Okay, what do you need me for?
Jason: I can normally read these guys enough to know if they're lying,
but on this I don't want there to be any private conversations while I'm
in the room.
Georgie: So I'll be there to keep everything honest.
Jason: Exactly. I'll inform them you're there because of our familial
relationship and that certain topics will be off limits but ...
Georgie: WSB is a world organization under the auspices of the United
Nations. The little piece that has the teeth. As long as they aren't
making plans to rule the world in front of me there shouldn't be a
problem. (She shrugs) And what happens in Russia is an internal
problem... until it isn't.
Jason: Lots of hairsplitting there.
Georgie: I'm an expert hair splitter. I have to be.

Wyndemere in Stefan and Laura's rooms. Laura frowns at a fax that has
just come over the line. She looks up as hearing Stefan call her name.
Stefan: Lasha! (Coming into the room) There you are. Were there any
problems while I was gone? Did Nikolas ask any questions?
Laura: (Answering the last question.) Of course he did. But I was able
to distract him.
Stefan: With what?
Laura: (handing Stefan the paper that he had missed that morning) This.
Stefan: (infuriated)WHAT! Why am I only seeing this now? How long must
we tolerate this... this creature?! This time she has gone too far!
I'll have her head, her job; she'll rue the day she crossed the
Cassadine! (Laura looks at her husband, grinning at his rant.) I fail to
see the humor in this! What are you smiling about?
Laura: You. "She'll rue the day?" (Laura starts to laugh) Thank you, I
needed that.
Stefan: (looking slightly sheepish.) I am glad you are amused. But
this really is intolerable.
Laura: (nodding) Exactly Nikolas' reaction. He's already begun an
investigation. How's Brooke?
Stefan: Tired. I believe I have discovered what is bothering Nikolas
however.
Laura: What?
Stefan: The bodyguard that's assigned to Brooke is a constant presence;
I was unable to get more than a moment alone with her. Brooke has grown
to rely on him and allows him to make most decisions for her.
Laura: (concerned) Is the trust misplaced?
Stefan: (shrugs and throws the Herald in the garbage can next to the
desk.) From what I could discern --no. But Nikolas would not
appreciate Brooke relying on someone other than himself. It would grate
on him.
Laura: Just how serious is it between Nikolas and Brooke?
Nik: (from the open doorway) I think perhaps, Mother, that's between
Brooke and me. (Turning to Stefan) And I thought that you had promised
no more interference?
Stefan: And I haven't interfered. I had some business so I thought I
would visit her while I was out of town.
Nik: Sudden business. And not anything we had discussed.
Laura: (Feeling the tension between the two men) If you'll excuse me, I
think I'll read some Mrs. Lansbury some of her papers. Call me if
there's any bloodshed.
Nik: (stepping out of her way) Of course. (Laura leaves.)
Stefan: Your mother shouldn't have to leave her own rooms because you
are in a tiff.
Nik: I don't think that tiff quite describes it. I wake to this
morning's Herald and you are nowhere to be found. Now I discover that
you were interfering in my life AGAIN by going to see Brooke. I want an
explanation.
Stefan: (sternly) Then moderate your tone. You know I do not respond
well to ultimatums.
Nik: (taking a deep breath before replying in a low even tone.) What
are you doing?
Stefan: I was checking on Brooke. You are not the only member of the
family to whom she has become important. I noticed that you were in
an... ill temper after speaking with her. I was concerned about her
well being.
Nik: (sighing and then taking a seat) And what did you discover?
Stefan: This Mark person (Nikolas sits straighter in his chair) is very
protective of her.
Nik: ( his eyes narrowing) They've become... "friends."
Stefan: (nodding) She mentioned as much. I wasn't able to get a moment
alone with her. But..
Nik:(prodding) But...
Stefan: She appeared tired. Brooke also indicated that she wasn't
feeling well and hadn't for a while. This "Mark" had made a doctor's
appointment for her.
Nik: (rising to his feet, concerned) She's ill?! Why didn't you say so
at the start?!
Stefan: There was something about her face. Nikolas I don't think that
she is ill exactly. I think that she is pregnant.
Nik: WHAT! That isn't possible. (Nik turns abruptly leaving the room)
Stefan: NIKOLAS! NIKOLAS WAIT. (Nik doesn't respond.)

Back stage at a medium sized venue hours later. Nik waits in Brooke's
dressing for her to finish as the opening act for a popular group. As
the applause kicks up, she exits the stage and runs into her dressing
room. Grabbing a towel, she wipes her face. Then looking in the
mirror, she sees Nik sitting along the wall.
Brooke: (ecstatic both to see him and also from the high of a great
set) NIK! Why didn't you tell me you were coming? I just saw Stefan
this afternoon; he didn't say a thing. (Running to him, she throws her
arms around him and kisses him. He's cold to her) What's wrong? Did
something happen to your mom or Staci?
Nik: No, Everyone is fine. When were you going to tell me?
Brooke: Tell you what?
Nik: (his voice flat and unemotional) About being pregnant.
Brooke: (Shocked) How did you know? I just took the test this
afternoon! I thought maybe I had an iron deficiency or something.
Nik: (bitterly) Evidently Stefan picked up on the clues faster than you
did. Whose is it, Brooke?
Brooke: (paling she moves away from him) What did you say?
Nik: Whose the father of this baby, Brooke? It can't be mine; we were
always careful.
Brooke: (shaking her head in disbelief) You sonofabitch! Wait--I take
that back, but only because I like your mother. Careful? What about
the plane to Gramma's birthday? Did you forget about that?
Nik: (repeating again colder) Whose is it, Brooke?
Brooke:(sarcastically) It's mine-- all mine. I was thinking of calling
the Pope to give him the happy news. You may think you're the second
coming, but maybe this child is. 'Cause I've only been with one guy
since I moved to Port Charles. But he's a jackass and jackasses can't
have kids.
Nik: (his voice hard and unforgiving) I've been here before-- some gold
digging hussy trying to get her hooks in the Cassadine money by playing
the oldest trick in the book.
Brooke: You've always had a problem confusing me with other women.
It's really getting tiresome, Nik. Who is it this time? Who am I?
Gina? Laura? Who played the trapping game?
Nik: (snarling) Katherine Bell.
Brooke: Guess what? That's not my name and it never has been. If I
had known you'd slept with that blackmailing, two timing bitch; I
wouldn't have touched you with a ten-foot pole. Just thinking about it
makes me want to hurl. What is it? Something else that you and my father
can share? You've always seemed to be jealous of the women in Daddy's
life. Maybe I should tell him to keep a close eye on Ma?
Nik: (in a voice that fills the room) Shut your mouth!
Brooke: NO! You come in here and insult me... insult what I thought we
had. Get out. Don't ever come near me again. I don't think I knew you
before, but I do now and I don't like you. (Nik turns sharply and
leaves, slamming the door behind him. Brooke collapses on the couch in
a jag of tears) Damn you, Nikolas Cassadine! you stupid, stubborn fool.
