CHAPTER 11: ONE STEP CLOSER

In Rio, Alan and Tony are waiting in a restaurant. Taking a sip of his
drink, Alan asks, "Well, what did you think?"

Tony sits back, "I studied all of Dr. Von Vetten's other papers before
we
arrived." He pulls a small notebook out of his suit pocket and looks
over it
as he continues, "And from the notes I took during the lectures,
everything
I've heard about him seems to be true."

Alan nods as Dr. Hans Von Vetten escorts his wife, Lesley, towards the
table. Softly he says, "Now, we just need to sell him on the PCU idea."

Hans and Lesley sit at the table and the foursome exchange greetings. As
soon as the pleasantries are over, Hans gets down to business, his voice
still heavily accented, "So, Dr. Quartermaine. Alan. I take it that you have
an agenda here."

Alan smiles slightly, surprised that Hans had him figured out so quickly,
"I
was hoping to talk to you about the med school."

Lesley looks at Alan, "In Port Charles?"

"The one and only," Alan says as he turns back to Hans, "I head up the
school now, and we're in need of a good neurologist on staff."

Hans glances from Alan to Tony, then back to Alan. "What about Dr.
Jones here? His reputation precedes him."

Tony smiles, "Thank you, Dr. Von Vetten, but Alan and I have already
discussed it. We think you would be better. Besides, I would like to
continue my practice. That's where my true passion lies."

Hans nods understandingly, "I see, well, what about my research? May I
continue that as well?"

"The university will fund most of your research. I'm positive that we
could find the monies elsewhere for what they won't fund." Alan smiles,
"Believe me, it's not a problem. And the location couldn't be nicer for you
both."

"You do not have to sell me on the value of Port Charles." Hans smiles as
he looks over at Lesley. "I will discuss this with my wife. I'm sure she
would love to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren."

Alexis hangs up the phone as Tom walks through he door. She glances up
at him as she goes back over to her desk. "Ah Tom, I'm glad your home.
I have to go to a meeting. Dinner's in the fridge," she says quickly.

"Alexis, please, don't go," he pleads, walking over to her.

She puts files in her briefcase and closes it while speaking, "I'm sorry, I
have to be there. Stone's upstairs doing his homework."

"Is this about Stefan's pet project?" Tom snipes.

Alexis rolls her eyes, "Tom, I have several things I'm working on..."

He interrupts, "Our marriage not being one of them."

Alexis stands and walks towards the door, "I love you, Tom, and family
comes first, but this is something I have to do. Besides, this is family
business."

She towards the door quickly. He flops on the sofa, "Yeah, it's family all
right. The Cassadine family, not ours."

She gives him one last glance over her shoulder as she walks out the door.

Derek Barrington sits casually in his car as the passenger door opens and a
dark haired wiry man gets in.

As Derek drives off, the man asks, "Well?"

"Scott Baldwin cannot be trusted."

The man only nods in reply.

Derek continues, "The girl's security is at it's lowest when she's with her
mother or aunt."

"Then we move at that time," the man asserts.

Derek nods, "Make your move, then get underground quick. I'm too
visible. I'll stay here and draw the flack away from you; give you time to
get the job done."

Derek pulls the car to a stop. As the man gets out, he says, "Consider the
matter completed."

Lu enters the club and looks quickly around. Mike walks up to her, "Hey
Lu, what are you doing here? Lucky's out of town."

She nods and motions him over to a quiet corner. "I know Lucky's out of
town." She slips off her coat, revealing a lavender gown accentuated with
lace and satin. She is not wearing her Cassadine pendant.

Mike takes her coat, "Wow, darlin'. You must look at least 25. Makes my
old heart flutter." He holds a hand over his heart exaggeratedly.

Lu smacks his shoulder playfully, "Down boy. I'm meeting someone."

Concerned, Mike asks, "Should I be worried?"

Lu shakes her head, "Nah. Just tell me if you've seen a guy in here with a
pink carnation."

Mike gestures towards the bar and a dark haired guy, "Just him."

She smiles, "That would be the one."

From his seat at the bar, Dylan glances over towards the door and sees a
gorgeous woman with long dark flowing locks, wearing the sexiest
lavender gown he's ever seen. She looks about 24 or so, he prays she
doesn't think he's just a kid. He straightens his tie and smiles as she
approaches.

As she gets near, he stands up, "Lu?" he asks nervously.

She smiles, he's so good looking. How did she luck out like this? He must
be older than she is, she thought, mentally deciding to keep up the older
image she was going for. She extended her hand to him, "Lesley Lu
Spencer."

He takes her hand in his and kisses it gently, "Dylan Hornsby, at your
service, my Princess."
